Cancun expects fewer spring break tourists when compared to the pre-pandemic period

According to official predictions, 20.000 travellers are expected to visit Cancun, Mexico during this year’s spring holidays.
As the Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) reports, more than 530 flights have arrived in Cancun on February 18, translating into a slight increase when compared to the day before. Nevertheless, despite growing tourist arrivals, authorities expect less visitors than in the pre-pandemic spring periods.
Jesús Almaguer Salazar, President of the Puerto Morelos & Isla Mujeres Hotel Association in Cancun commented, while estimating that no more than 20.000 tourists will visit the area:
“Unfortunately times are not like before when we would reach 90 or 100,000 tourists during that season. The hotels are trying to optimize the flow of tourists to have better occupancy rates.”
Numbers are also expected to fluctuate depending on the Covid-19 pandemic status of the region and in the US, as well as on safety concerns related to drug cartels conflicts on Cancun beaches. Violences in the area were reported last year when two Canadians and one local were killed in gang shootings happening often since October 2021.
In order to avoid such incidents, the Tourist Security Battalion has increased beach patrols, while the Ministry of National Defense and SEMAR have announced enhanced security operations in seven airports across the country.
