Bonaire island named 2022 WFTA culinary capital
The award was offered by the World Food Travel Association, which has elected Bonaire to be the second member of the Culinary Capital program for this year. The NGO’s choice was made by following five different culinary criteria: culture, strategy, promotion, community, and sustainability.
“I loved reading Bonaire’s application because it opened up a rich culinary culture that we knew nothing about before. Now the rest of the world will begin to hear more about the fantastic food and beverage products and experiences that this destination offers”, commented Erik Wolf, the organization’s founder and executive director.
Miles B.M. Mercera, CEO of Tourism Corporation Bonaire, added:
“This certification is a great boost for Bonaire and all the hard-working professionals who have put the diverse culinary culture of our small island on the map in recent years. [...]
“It is an important step in our overall vision to develop and promote our gastronomic scene along with other island experiences that go beyond the fantastic diving we’ve always been known for.”
Bonaire is a small island in the southern Caribbean, located close to Venezuela, known for its blue diving waters, kite surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling and more attractive holiday activities. The island is a municipality of the Netherlands and is considered to be one of the top destinations worldwide for sustainable tourism. And with the recent nomination, officials hope that the island will gain more global recognition.
The Culinary Capital program was launched back in 2021 to help boost post-pandemic tourism across lesser popular destinations worldwide. The island country of Grenada was the first to be awarded the prize last year.
