Airlines for Europe: Immigration Checks Understaffed

News

Borders are currently understaffed for controls of immigrants trying to enter European countries.

According to Airlines for Europe, concerns are raised at border control due to lack of personnel checking on immigrants. This seems to be the main cause of flights delay several airports across Europe have experienced lately.

Check enforcements have significantly affected the holiday season, as passengers needed to absorb the implementation of the new EU Regulation triggering cumbersome traffic flow patterns in most of European airports.

“Member States need to take all necessary measures now to prevent such disruptions and deploy appropriate staff and resources in sufficient numbers to carry out the requested checks. A4E has stressed the disproportionate waiting times and disrupted flow of traffic at external borders with the European Commission and calls for a swift solution on behalf of European passengers and airlines. Especially during the peak season of the year, travellers face long lines and can’t get on their flights.”

“Queuing for up to four hours has been the top record these days; airports like Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Lisbon, Lyon, Paris-Orly, Milan or Brussels are producing shameful pictures of devastated passengers in front of immigration booths, in lines stretching hundreds of metres."

"At some airports, flight delays have increased by 300 per cent compared to last year - member states must take the responsibility for this,” Thomas Reynaert, the managing director of A4E commented in a statement.

Due to the fact that the new regulation is yet to be implemented in all EU member states, more air traffic disruptions are expected for the weeks to come, as the dead line for the implementation procedures dues on October 7th, after a 6 month period.

Nevertheless, despite Airlines for Europe shows full support for the enactments, the shortage of border resources continues to severely impact the operations of air-carries across most of the airports in the continent.
