Airbus Seeks Collaboration with Air France-KLM for A350 Component Support

Airlines & Airports

Airbus and Air France-KLM have initiated exclusive discussions regarding a potential joint venture (JV) aimed at delivering maintenance services for Airbus A350 components.

This prospective collaboration seeks to expand the capacity for A350 maintenance and broaden its global presence, with intentions to commence operations in the first half of 2024.

Joint A350 Maintenance Venture by Airbus and Air France-KLM

The two corporations are poised to establish the joint venture as a balanced 50-50 partnership, with a primary focus on offering Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services for A350 aircraft on a global scale. By amalgamating the specialized skills of Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Airbus, this MRO JV aspires to contribute significantly to supply chain management, repairs, and the creation of a global repository of aircraft components, all designed to enhance the long-term maintenance requirements of the global A350 fleet.

Anne Brachet, Executive Vice President of Air France-KLM Engineering & Maintenance, expressed her perspective, stating,

"This project aims to bring customers the best expertise of our two companies on a product as high-tech as the A350. We will be able to better respond to the needs of the market, and to guarantee the satisfaction of our customers over the long term, with support solutions that are always responsive, of high quality and at the right price."

The venture plans to introduce an "optimized commercial offering" with a global reach, particularly as more airlines incorporate the A350 into their fleets. Presently, approximately 550 A350 aircraft are operational worldwide, with the majority being the A350-900 model (473) and the extended A350-1000 variant (77). Moreover, there are over 1,000 A350 aircraft on order, underscoring the pressing need for expanded maintenance capabilities on a global scale.

Airbus and Air France-KLM aspire to have the JV operational by the first half of the ensuing year, subject to regulatory approvals. This process will involve the transfer of component assets from both entities in the coming months.

Cristina Aguilar, Senior Vice President Customer Services at Airbus, underscored the significance of their collaboration, stating,

"As the world’s A350 fleet grows, so does the necessary support. Air France-KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Airbus have a long-standing relationship and pooling our complementary A350 component skills and capabilities will deliver an enhanced service."

Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance is among the world's foremost MRO service providers, offering maintenance support to nearly 3,000 aircraft across 200 airlines worldwide. This division generates annual revenues of approximately €1.0 billion ($1.07 billion), employing over 12,800 personnel and holding certifications to service a diverse array of aircraft, encompassing Boeing's 737, 777, and 787 series, as well as Airbus' A220, A320, A330, A350, and A380.

Notably, Air France currently operates a fleet of 21 A350-900 aircraft, with an additional 20 units on order following an expansion of its order book with Airbus earlier this year. On the other hand, KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, does not presently operate the A350, although it is contemplating its inclusion in future fleet plans. With plans to phase out older A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft, KLM is evaluating both the A350-900 and A350-1000 models. Despite KLM's historical preference for Boeing aircraft, the airline has not ruled out the possibility of ordering more Boeing 787 Dreamliners or committing to Boeing's upcoming 777X series.
