Marriott to open world’s first urban Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai

Marriott to open world’s first urban Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai

Marriott International has signed an agreement to bring Ritz-Carlton Reserve to Shanghai, marking the global debut of a new urban version of the ultra-luxury brand.

Scheduled to open in 2030, the hotel will occupy part of a major mixed-use development on Shanghai’s North Bund and is expected to feature 110 rooms and suites.

The agreement with Shanghai SIIC North Bund New Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd. represents a significant shift for Ritz-Carlton Reserve, a brand historically associated with secluded resorts in distinctive leisure destinations.

The Shanghai property will become the first example of Marriott’s new “urban Reserve” concept, which aims to translate the brand’s focus on privacy, highly personalised service and destination-led experiences into major global cities.

“Bringing that philosophy to Shanghai for our first urban Reserve is an incredibly exciting evolution for the brand,” said Tina Edmundson, President of Luxury at Marriott International.

“Shanghai is a city unlike any other, where extraordinary heritage and culture exist alongside incredible creativity, energy and global influence.”

Ritz-Carlton Reserve moves into the city

Ritz-Carlton Reserve has traditionally maintained a small portfolio of highly individual properties built around their destinations, with an emphasis on privacy and immersive experiences.

Marriott plans to retain that selective approach as it introduces the brand to urban markets.

Rather than positioning urban Reserve properties as conventional city hotels, the company intends to create highly private retreats within major cities, with experiences centred around local culture, wellness and personalised service.

The Shanghai hotel will be the first test of that strategy.

“There is an intimacy to Reserve – an extraordinary level of personalization, a deep connection to local culture, and a sense of discovery and wellbeing that allows guests to experience a place in an entirely different way,” Edmundson said.

Marriott said future urban Reserve expansion will remain highly selective and focused on major global gateway cities.

Hotel to occupy landmark 480-metre North Bund tower

The Ritz-Carlton Reserve will form the ultra-luxury hotel component of a major development rising approximately 480 metres above Shanghai’s North Bund.

The 103-storey project will also include offices, retail space, residences and an observation deck, making it a significant addition to the city’s skyline.

Many of the hotel’s 110 guestrooms and suites are expected to offer views across the Huangpu River and the Bund. Accommodation will include a collection of larger suites and a Presidential Suite.

The North Bund waterfront is undergoing extensive redevelopment as Shanghai expands its commercial, cultural and tourism infrastructure along the Huangpu River.

“As North Bund continues to evolve into one of Shanghai’s most important waterfront districts, our vision is to create a landmark destination that contributes to the city’s emergence as a leading global center for culture, commerce, and tourism,” said Huang Haiping, Vice President of SIIC Group and Chairman of Shanghai SIIC North Bund Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd.

Restaurants, spa and wellness at the heart of the property

Marriott plans to make dining and wellness central to the Shanghai Reserve experience.

Current plans include a specialty restaurant, Chinese dining concepts, a lobby lounge and a bespoke bar.

Wellness facilities will include an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre and spa and wellness retreat.

The hotel will also incorporate cultural experiences designed specifically around Shanghai, reflecting Marriott’s broader strategy of targeting luxury travellers seeking experiences tied more closely to local culture and place.

Shanghai set to host all eight Marriott luxury brands

The 2030 opening would also give Shanghai another distinction within Marriott’s global network.

According to the company, Shanghai is expected to become the only city in the world to feature all eight of Marriott International’s luxury brands once the Ritz-Carlton Reserve opens.

The signing reflects Marriott’s continued expansion at the top end of the hospitality market in Greater China, where the company sees long-term demand for highly personalised and experience-focused luxury travel.

For Ritz-Carlton Reserve, however, the Shanghai project represents a broader strategic development: moving a brand built around remote and destination-focused properties into some of the world’s largest cities without abandoning the exclusivity that defines its positioning.
