German airline SUNDAIR has launched direct flights between Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and Damascus, restoring a non-stop connection between the German capital region and Syria for the first time since 2011.
The new route began operating on August 15 and will run twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, using an Airbus A320 with capacity for 180 passengers.
The service follows a bilateral air services agreement concluded between Germany and Syria in mid-July and expands Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s network of destinations in the Middle East.
Berlin-Damascus Direct Flights Return After 15 Years
The launch marks the return of scheduled non-stop flights between Berlin and Syria after an absence of approximately 15 years.
The route is expected to be particularly relevant for passengers in Berlin and the surrounding region who have family, personal or business connections with Syria, removing the need to travel via an intermediate airport.
It also adds Damascus to BER’s existing network of Middle Eastern destinations.
SUNDAIR Berlin-Damascus Flight Schedule
SUNDAIR will operate the service twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
BER to Damascus
Flights depart Berlin Brandenburg Airport at 11:00 and arrive in Damascus at 16:05 local time.
The scheduled flight time is approximately four hours.
Damascus to Berlin
Return services leave Damascus at 17:05 and arrive at Berlin Brandenburg Airport at 20:30.
The return journey takes approximately four hours and 20 minutes.
There is a one-hour time difference between Berlin and Damascus.
Airbus A320 to Operate the Syria Route
SUNDAIR will use an Airbus A320 configured for 180 passengers on the new service.
The airline currently operates a fleet comprising three Airbus A320s and one Airbus A319.
Based in Stralsund, SUNDAIR has an operational base near Berlin Brandenburg Airport and serves a mix of traditional leisure destinations and routes aimed at passengers travelling for family or business reasons.
SUNDAIR Expands Middle East Network From Berlin
From BER, the German carrier operates flights to destinations across the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, North Africa and the Middle East.
Its network includes destinations such as Beirut, Heraklion, Burgas, Gran Canaria, Varna, Kos and Monastir, alongside the newly launched Damascus service.
The addition of Syria further develops the airline’s network beyond conventional holiday routes, particularly for passengers travelling to visit friends and relatives.
Germany-Syria Air Agreement Enables New Route
The launch became possible following a bilateral air services agreement between Germany and Syria concluded in mid-July.
The agreement created the framework required for direct commercial air services between the two countries to resume.
For Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the new SUNDAIR route restores direct connectivity with Damascus while broadening the airport’s links with the Middle East.
The twice-weekly schedule also provides passengers travelling between the two capitals with a non-stop alternative to connecting itineraries through other European or regional hubs.
