Zurich Airport will allow departing local passengers to carry liquid containers of up to 2 litres in hand baggage from Friday, June 26, following the completion of its CT scanner upgrade across all 26 screening lanes in the Security Control Building.
The new 3D CT scanners can reliably detect and analyze liquids and electronic devices without requiring them to be removed from bags. From June 26, passengers will no longer need to place liquids in a separate plastic bag or take electronics out of their luggage, streamlining the screening process and reducing wait times.
The technology rollout began in late 2025 and is now in its final phase, with no conventional screening equipment remaining in operation at the Security Control Building. All 26 lanes are equipped with the new CT technology.
There are a few important exceptions to note. Double-walled containers such as thermos bottles may only be carried through security when empty, as their multi-layer construction can prevent scanners from identifying the contents. Analogue photographic film may be damaged by CT scanners and should be presented separately for manual screening.
The 2-litre rule applies only to local passengers screened in the Security Control Building. Transfer passengers, whose screening areas have not yet been upgraded, must still comply with the existing 100ml limit in containers transported in a transparent resealable bag of up to 1 litre. The conversion of transfer screening areas will take place at a later stage.
Passengers traveling onward from Zurich to other airports should also check the liquid rules at their destination or transit airports, as different regulations may apply.
