Sun Group and CAI partner to develop Phu Quoc into aviation hub
Sun Group and Changi Airports International (CAI) have signed a strategic agreement to develop Phu Quoc International Airport into Vietnam’s first “airport destination”, combining aviation infrastructure with tourism, retail and entertainment.
Under the partnership, CAI will provide advisory support to improve airport operations, commercial performance, air connectivity and service standards. The goal is to create a seamless travel experience while boosting the airport’s global competitiveness.
The project comes ahead of the APEC 2027 Summit, when Phu Quoc is expected to welcome a significant number of international visitors and global leaders.
Passenger traffic at Phu Quoc International Airport reached around six million in 2025 and has been growing rapidly. A government-approved expansion plan includes a new runway and Terminal 2, increasing capacity to 24 million passengers annually, with long-term scalability to 50 million.
The collaboration aims to position Phu Quoc as a key aviation gateway in the Asia-Pacific region. It combines CAI’s expertise in airport management with Sun Group’s experience in developing integrated tourism and entertainment destinations.
Singapore Changi Airport, widely recognised as a benchmark for airport excellence, serves as a model for the project, where the airport itself becomes part of the travel experience.
Officials from both organisations highlighted the importance of airports as more than just transport hubs, emphasizing their role in shaping the first impression of a destination and driving long-term economic growth.
