Dublin Airport Installs Ireland’s First Pantograph EV Bus Chargers

Dublin Airport has become the first location in Ireland to deploy pantograph electric bus chargers, unveiled today as part of a €17 million investment in sustainable ground transport for the airport’s shuttle bus operations.

The new infrastructure powers a fleet of 14 zero-emission electric shuttle buses operated by Aircoach, each capable of carrying up to 120 passengers, serving the circa 2.5 million passengers who travel annually between the airport’s car parks and terminal buildings. Aircoach invested a further €11 million in the new bus fleet.

Pantograph charging uses automated retractable arms to deliver high-power rapid charging at the end of each route, meaning buses can top up between runs without returning to a depot. This reduces downtime and supports more reliable, higher-frequency service throughout the day. A dedicated seven-bay depot charging facility provides additional overnight and backup capacity.

The switch from diesel to electric is expected to save over 1,470 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, contributing to Dublin Airport’s decarbonisation targets validated under the Science Based Targets Initiative. The investment also required major voltage upgrades to the airport’s electrical infrastructure.

“This type of charging is well suited to high-frequency fixed routes, enabling smaller batteries and fast opportunity charging instead of lengthy depot charging — cleaner, quieter and more reliable journeys for passengers,” said Vincent Harrison, daa Chief Commercial and Development Officer.

The development adds to a broader sustainability push at Dublin Airport, which recently achieved ACA Level 4+ carbon management certification, placing it among the top 13% of airports globally. The airport has also transitioned 82% of its light commercial fleet to low-emission vehicles and converted its entire heavy fleet to HVO fuel or electric power.
