Munich Airport and Lufthansa extend partnership to 2056 with expansion plans
Munich Airport and Lufthansa have announced a major extension of their long-standing partnership, with a new agreement that sets the framework for growth and collaboration through 2056.
key element of the deal is the planned expansion of Terminal 2 infrastructure, including the construction of a new pier connected to the existing satellite building. The project is expected to increase the airport’s capacity by up to 10 million passengers annually, with completion targeted for 2035.
The agreement also includes plans to expand Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet in Munich, strengthening the airport’s role as a major international hub and improving global connectivity from Bavaria.
The partnership is expected to boost the regional economy, create new jobs and support long-term growth in the aviation sector.
Munich Airport and Lufthansa have operated a unique joint venture since 2003, sharing responsibility for Terminal 2 operations. Today, the terminal and its satellite facility handle up to 36 million passengers per year.
Officials highlighted that the expansion will be managed within the existing two-runway system, with no impact on the current moratorium on a third runway.
The agreement reinforces Munich’s position as a leading European hub, with both partners aiming to enhance passenger experience, increase capacity and support future demand.
