easyJet donates 500 iPads to UK schools to tackle digital poverty

Society

easyJet has announced a new initiative to donate hundreds of iPads to schools across the UK, aiming to support students affected by digital poverty and improve access to education.

The airline will begin by distributing around 500 devices previously used by its crew and flight teams, in partnership with the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA). The iPads will be allocated to schools in disadvantaged communities, particularly near easyJet’s UK bases including Luton, Gatwick and Newcastle.

The move comes as digital exclusion continues to affect millions across the UK. According to recent data, one in five children lack access to adequate devices, connectivity or digital skills, limiting their ability to participate fully in education.

Research commissioned by easyJet found that 77% of parents believe a lack of technology restricts children’s learning opportunities, while 93% say access to devices improves educational outcomes. Nearly half of parents also expressed concern about not being able to provide sufficient technology for their children.

In addition to the device donation, easyJet has signed the Digital Inclusion Charter, committing to ongoing support for digital access through future device renewal programmes.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to address inequalities in education and prepare young people for a digital future, where skills such as coding, data analysis and cybersecurity are becoming increasingly important.

The Digital Poverty Alliance, established in 2021, aims to eliminate digital poverty in the UK by 2030. The organisation will oversee distribution of the devices through its network of schools and community partners.

easyJet said the program reflects its wider social and sustainability commitments, alongside efforts to reduce environmental impact and improve operational efficiency.
