American Airlines has unveiled a major international network expansion for 2027, adding seven new routes and three destinations as it increases capacity across Europe and Asia.
The carrier will add Porto, Vienna and Reykjavik to its Philadelphia network, while New York JFK will gain new nonstop services to Amsterdam and Nice. Charlotte will receive another European connection with flights to Barcelona, and American will link Chicago with Tokyo Narita.
The airline is also adding a fourth daily flight between New York JFK and London Heathrow.
All of the newly announced summer routes will operate daily, with tickets going on sale August 31.

“Our international network has expanded to offer destinations to satisfy every travel palate. Combined with our investments enhancing our onboard product and inflight experience, travelers have more reasons to choose American when they fly around the world.”
American Airlines’ New International Routes for 2027
American’s 2027 international expansion includes:
- Charlotte – Barcelona: launches May 27, operated by Boeing 777-200ER
- Chicago – Tokyo Narita: launches March 19, operated by Boeing 787-9
- New York JFK – Amsterdam: launches March 28, operated by Airbus A321XLR
- New York JFK – Nice: launches May 6, operated by Airbus A321XLR
- Philadelphia – Porto: launches March 28, operated by Airbus A321XLR
- Philadelphia – Reykjavik: launches May 27, operated by Airbus A321neo
- Philadelphia – Vienna: launches May 6, operated by Airbus A321XLR
In addition, American will introduce a fourth daily New York JFK-London Heathrow flight from March 28 using a Boeing 787-9 equipped with Flagship Suite seats.
Philadelphia Adds Vienna, Porto and Reykjavik
Philadelphia will see some of the biggest changes, with three destinations joining American’s network from the airport.
The airline will serve both Vienna and Porto for the first time, while Reykjavik returns to the network for the first time since 2019.
American’s daily Philadelphia-Vienna service will begin on May 6 with the Airbus A321XLR. The airline expects to operate an extended season through early January 2028, allowing the route to cover the Christmas and New Year travel period.
American says it will be the only U.S. airline serving Vienna when the flights begin. The route follows the carrier’s recent expansion in Central Europe, including Prague and Budapest services introduced in 2026.
Porto will join the Philadelphia network from March 28, also using the A321XLR, opening a new nonstop option to northern Portugal and the nearby Douro Valley.
Flights to Reykjavik will begin on May 27 with an Airbus A321neo, responding to continued demand for Iceland as a summer leisure destination.
American Adds Amsterdam and Nice Flights from New York JFK
Two additional European destinations will join American’s JFK network.
Daily flights between New York and Amsterdam will begin on March 28 using the Airbus A321XLR. The route will complement American’s existing year-round Philadelphia-Amsterdam service and seasonal flights from Dallas-Fort Worth.
Nice will follow on May 6, also using an A321XLR, providing another direct link between New York and the French Riviera.
The service will give travellers nonstop access to Nice and connections to other destinations along the Côte d’Azur, including Cannes, Antibes and surrounding coastal communities.
Barcelona Gets Sixth American Airlines U.S. Gateway
American will also introduce daily service between Charlotte and Barcelona on May 27.
Operated by a Boeing 777-200ER, Charlotte will become American’s sixth U.S. gateway offering flights to the Catalan capital.
The airline says the addition will give it more service to Barcelona than any other U.S. carrier.
American is also extending the operating season of its Charlotte-Paris service, which will return from March 4, 2027, reflecting increased demand for European travel around the U.S. spring break period.
Chicago-Tokyo Flights Target Japan Travel Demand
In Asia, American will launch nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Narita on March 19.
The daily route will use a Boeing 787-9 and is timed to capture demand around Japan’s popular cherry blossom season.
Passengers will also be able to connect beyond Tokyo to destinations across East and Southeast Asia through American’s partnership with Japan Airlines.
American Adds Fourth Daily JFK-London Heathrow Flight
London remains a major focus for American’s international network, particularly for premium travel.
From March 28, the airline will restore a fourth daily flight between New York JFK and London Heathrow. The additional frequency will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 featuring American’s Flagship Suite product.
Together with British Airways, American says the transatlantic partnership will offer up to 14 daily flights between New York and London.
American began introducing its Flagship Suite seats on London services from Chicago and Philadelphia in 2025 before expanding the product to flights from Dallas-Fort Worth, New York and Los Angeles.
The carrier says it will continue deploying aircraft with the upgraded premium product to Heathrow throughout 2027.
More European Capacity for Summer 2027
Alongside the newly announced routes, American is extending the seasons of other European services.
Charlotte-Paris and Miami-Milan flights will both begin on March 4, giving travellers additional options during the spring travel period rather than concentrating service solely around the peak summer months.
The expansion comes as American continues to increase the role of its Airbus A321XLR fleet on thinner long-haul routes. Four of the newly announced international services — JFK-Amsterdam, JFK-Nice, Philadelphia-Porto and Philadelphia-Vienna — will use the long-range narrowbody aircraft.
Across its wider network, American operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries. Through its oneworld partners, passengers have access to a combined network of more than 1,000 destinations worldwide.
