American Airlines will begin serving Vienna Airport for the first time in May 2027, launching a new nonstop connection between the Austrian capital and Philadelphia.
The seasonal route will begin on May 6, 2027, and operate daily using an Airbus A321XLR. It will also mark the first time Vienna and Philadelphia have been connected by scheduled nonstop flights.
The service adds another U.S. destination to Vienna Airport’s long-haul network while giving passengers access to American Airlines’ extensive connecting network from its Philadelphia hub.

“This inaugural direct service to Philadelphia, the sixth-largest city in the United States, adds an attractive new destination to our long-haul network and offers excellent connections to numerous locations across North and South America.”
Jäger described North America as one of Vienna Airport’s key growth markets and said the new service would further strengthen the airport’s transatlantic connectivity.
Daily Vienna-Philadelphia Flights from May 2027
American Airlines will operate the route according to the following schedule:
Vienna (VIE) – Philadelphia (PHL): Departure at 11:40 a.m., arrival at 3:55 p.m.
Philadelphia (PHL) – Vienna (VIE): Departure at 6:50 p.m., arrival in Vienna at 10:05 a.m. the following day.
The flights will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, the extended-range version of the A321neo designed for long-haul routes.
Although primarily a seasonal service, American Airlines will also operate the route during the Christmas holiday period in December, targeting demand for trips to Vienna and Austria’s Christmas markets.
Philadelphia is one of American’s major U.S. hubs, providing connections to more than 100 destinations. Passengers arriving from Vienna will be able to connect onwards across the United States as well as to destinations in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

U.S. Remains a Key Tourism Market for Vienna
The new route is also expected to support inbound tourism from the United States, already one of Vienna’s most important long-haul visitor markets.
U.S. travellers generated approximately 1.3 million overnight stays in Vienna during 2025, according to the Vienna Tourist Board.
The U.S. market also ranks first for revenue generated from overnight stays in Vienna’s five-star hotel sector.
“With American Airlines’ new direct flight between Philadelphia and Vienna, our city is achieving even greater international visibility and accessibility,” said Norbert Kettner, CEO of the Vienna Tourist Board.
“The U.S. is the most important long-haul market for Vienna’s leisure tourism, as well as for business travelers and meetings industry.”
Kettner added that the route should improve access to Vienna from the northeastern United States while supporting the city’s tourism and business economy.
Philadelphia Adds New U.S. Gateway for Vienna Travellers
Beyond its role as a connecting hub, Philadelphia provides a new nonstop destination for Austrian travellers visiting the U.S. East Coast.
The city is known for historic landmarks including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and played a central role in the founding of the United States. It is also a major centre for healthcare, science, education and business.
Its East Coast location provides relatively easy access to other major destinations in the region, including New York and Washington, D.C.
American Airlines currently operates thousands of daily flights to more than 350 destinations in over 60 countries and is a founding member of the oneworld alliance.
The addition of Vienna in 2027 will further expand the carrier’s European network while giving Vienna Airport another direct link to the United States.
