Milan Bergamo Airport has been awarded a Highly Commended distinction at the ACI EUROPE HR Excellence Awards, recognizing its “Call for Ideas 2025 – Building the Airport of the Future Together” initiative, an employee-led innovation programme that generated 13 projects across strategic airport themes.
The programme, promoted by SACBO’s Human Resources Department, invited all employees from SACBO and BGY International Services to submit ideas for improving processes, services, and organisational practices. It launched in May 2025, closed submissions in September, and then guided participants through three practical workshops between October and November to help them develop their proposals into viable projects.
Seventeen participants submitted 13 projects individually or in teams, covering areas including operational process optimisation, safety and security, service quality, passenger flow management, and artificial intelligence applications. The submissions were evaluated by a multidisciplinary internal committee, supported by the Innovation Managers of both Aeroporti di Roma and SEA Milan Airports as external members.
The winning project, “Outsight: A New Model for Optimised Airport Flow Management,” proposed an AI-based system capable of anonymously tracking passenger movements through the terminal, enabling advanced analytics to improve flows, understand customer behaviour, and monitor commercial performance.
The ACI EUROPE jury noted that the initiative fostered a strong sense of belonging among staff and highlighted the integration of AI to support health and safety outcomes as a forward-looking approach to workforce engagement.
In 2026, the programme has entered a second phase, with workshops bringing together project authors and internal experts to assess feasibility and advance the most promising ideas toward operational pilot testing.
