Lufthansa Group Revamps Carbon Offset Portfolio with Tech Focus

Airlines & Airports

The Lufthansa Group has overhauled its climate protection project portfolio, placing greater emphasis on technology-based carbon removal solutions and expanding the share of projects that permanently extract CO₂ from the atmosphere.

The new portfolio comprises 14 projects certified to the highest available standards, including the Gold Standard recommended by the German Environment Agency. Around 20 percent of the portfolio now consists of removal projects — double the previous share — with the remainder focused on avoidance projects that prevent emissions outside the aviation sector, such as energy-efficient cookstoves and biogas plants.

For the first time, the portfolio includes Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) projects, which filter CO₂ from ambient air and store it underground long-term. The Lufthansa Group is already working with partners including Deep Sky, Airbus, and Climeworks to develop and scale these technologies.

In 2025, passengers contributed to projects covering more than 710,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ through the group's sustainable travel options, a rise of around 20 percent compared to the previous year.

"With our carefully curated portfolio, we are increasingly focusing on technology-based projects that enable long-term CO₂ sequestration," said Nina Sproedt, Head of Sustainability at Lufthansa Group.

Projects are being implemented across Lufthansa Group's home markets of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy, as well as internationally. The group is working with partners including myclimate, First Climate, Ceezer, Senken, Climeworks, and 1PointFive.
