15.7 million passengers have transited the airport in the UK capital in 2017, translating into an 8.6 per cent increase when compared with 2016.

As in 2018 the airport will celebrate its 80th anniversary, Luton will experience significant changes. In order to mark this important moment, officials have announced the opening of the upgraded terminal building and eight more boarding gates.

Moreover, passengers will have access to more routes, heading for Athens, Larnaca, Keflavik, Bari, Genoa, and Reus. This will sum up a total of 140 destinations towards Europe, Asia and Africa.

Four more fast trains per hour will also stop at Luton Airport Parkway station in order to cope with the economic boost in the area.

“Last year has been another record breaker at LLA, and we look forward to welcoming even more passengers as we enter our 80th year. Throughout 2018, passengers will see the airport transformed as we officially open our new terminal and reach the first phase of construction for the Mass Passenger Transit system which will replace the current shuttle bus and create a rapid link between the train station and the terminal. However, this is only part of the solution to better public transport links and is why we continue to call on the government for four fast trains per hour between central London and Luton Airport Parkway,” commented Nick Barton, the airport’s CEO.

On the long term, the officials at LLA expect the passenger flow to constantly increase, so they will invest £150 million to boost airport capacity by 50 per cent by the end of 2020.
