American Airlines Upgrades A319 and A320 Cabins with More Premium Seats

American Airlines has begun retrofitting its Airbus A319 and A320 narrowbody fleets this summer, introducing enhanced interiors with more premium seating, improved storage, and updated connectivity across the cabin.

The retrofitted aircraft align in design and finish with American’s newly delivered Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR, creating a more consistent experience across the fleet. Premium cabin seats feature new privacy wings, additional storage space, and two cocktail beverage trays. The A319 fleet will expand its premium class to 12 seats, while A320 retrofits increase the premium cabin to 16 seats.

Throughout the aircraft, larger overhead bins provide more carry-on storage, and USB-C power outlets have been added at every seat. Enhanced mood lighting and updated trim and finish complete the interior refresh.

“We’ve strengthened the journey from curb to cabin, and we are excited for customers to fly on these aircraft this summer and beyond,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer.

Free Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T is already available on A319 and A320 aircraft for AAdvantage members. Starlink connectivity is planned for both fleet types in 2027.

The retrofit programme is part of American’s broader effort to expand premium seating across its mainline and regional fleets. The airline expects to increase lie-flat seats on international aircraft by more than 50% by the end of the decade, supported by new 787-9 deliveries, A321XLR aircraft, and retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER and 777-200ER widebodies.
