Lufthansa Group Launches Starlink-Powered In-Flight Wi-Fi, Free for Loyalty Members

Lufthansa Group will introduce a new era of onboard connectivity on August 19, when the first aircraft equipped with Starlink-powered high-speed Wi-Fi enters commercial service.

A Lufthansa Airbus A320neo will operate the inaugural flight featuring the new internet service, offering passengers internet speeds that, in many cases, exceed those available in homes and offices.

Starlink Rollout Across 850 Aircraft

Lufthansa Group has partnered with Starlink to equip approximately 850 aircraft across its airlines with next-generation satellite internet powered by low-Earth orbit technology.

The rollout will include aircraft operated by:

  • Lufthansa
  • SWISS
  • Austrian Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • ITA Airways
  • Eurowings
  • Discover Airlines
  • Edelweiss
  • Air Dolomiti
  • Lufthansa City Airlines

Once completed by 2029, Lufthansa Group will become Europe’s largest airline group offering Starlink-powered onboard connectivity.

Faster Internet for Streaming and Remote Work

The new service will support bandwidth-intensive activities, including:

  • Video streaming
  • Cloud-based work applications
  • Web browsing
  • Online messaging
  • Other high-speed internet services

The project forms part of Lufthansa Group’s broader investment strategy, which includes new aircraft, upgraded cabins, and digital innovations designed to improve the passenger experience throughout the journey.

Commenting on the launch, Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, said:

“I am excited to announce the launch of the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi on board our Group aircraft. With it, we’re making high-speed internet an integral part of the travel experience – across all travel classes and on all Lufthansa Group airlines. That is how we understand premium.”

He added:

“By 2029, all of the Group’s approximately 850 aircraft will be equipped with the technology. Our product promise doesn’t end with the seats or the menu – today, connectivity is also an integral part of a truly outstanding onboard experience.”

Free Access for Loyalty Members

The new onboard Wi-Fi will be free of charge for all Miles & More members and Travel ID users, regardless of travel class.

Passengers will be required to accept the service’s terms of use before connecting. Based on customer feedback, the rules include:

  • Wearing headphones when playing audio or video.
  • No voice or video calls during the flight.
  • No live streaming from onboard the aircraft.

The onboard Wi-Fi service will continue to be sponsored by Mastercard, extending its existing partnership with Lufthansa Group’s FlyNet platform.

With the introduction of Starlink connectivity, Lufthansa Group is significantly enhancing the digital travel experience while setting a new benchmark for in-flight internet across Europe.
