Venice: strong campaign against tourists

News

During the last season there was initiated a strong campaign against tourists accused of destroying the city of Venice. Flyers were distributed all over the area complaining that the tourists worldwide are representing a threat for the city’s legacy.

Venice citizens are bothered by the big waves of foreigners who come to visit their country, inform yahoo.com. Posters saying "Go away tourists" in English appeared briefly on walls in Venice's Castello district Thursday before residents took them down. More, "Tourists, go! Destroy the area!" message printed on flyers pasted on the walls of several buildings in town, including one of the oldest churches in Venice, San Giovanni in Bragora, according to Corriere del Veneto newspaper.

The posters sparked a lively Internet debate about the increasing impact of mass tourism on Venice and recent initiatives to try to stop tourists leaving rubbish in the streets.

For now, the authors of the initiative against tourists remain unknown. Many locals were tired of the hordes of tourists who walk in Piazza San Marco, blocking bridges and crowding alleys, said an article on Yahoo News. In an attempt to relieve the pressure, locals use separate entrances in local ship transport, called vaporetto. The initiative that has started in June, allows locals to board more quickly, avoiding tourists.
