Both Egypt and Tunisia have experienced significant tourism arrivals decrease in 2016, due to tourist safety concerns
Research agency Euromonitor International has released a new data report showing that tourism arrival rate to Egypt has decreased by 46% year-on-year. Moreover, the latest crash of Egyptair MS804 flight on May 19 is expected to be the main reason of figures constantly dropping in the near future.
Nadejda Popova, project manager at Euromonitor International, commented: “The latest events with the crashed Egyptian aircraft are expected to further impact negatively the performance of the tourism sector in the country. Specifically, the government must reassure travellers and potential tourists that the country is doing enough to uproot terrorism and secure the safety of travellers.”
At the same time, tourists visiting Tunisia have fallen by 18.7%, following the British Foreign Office advisory against all non-essential travel to the country.
Other popular destinations in the area are also affected by the security crisis: tourism arrivals for Turkey have dropped by 9.9%, Greece has registered a 11% decrease in the first quarter of the year, while France welcomed 8% less foreign visitors.
