Record Passenger Numbers At Heathrow As Airport Demands Third Runway

Airline News

By Steve Sims |

A record-breaking 6.68 million passengers passed through Heathrow in June 2015, while 40,626 flights transited the airport, making it the busiest June for both passengers and aircraft movements.

The number for passengers represents an increase of 1.1 per cent over last year's June.

The growth in passenger numbers can be attributed to the larger and quieter aircraft currently used at Heathrow.heathrow third lane

Average number of seats per aircraft increased 2.2 per cent to 208, while transported passengers per aircraft climbed to 165.1 – a 0.4 per cent increase.

Passenger volumes were strong within emerging markets, especially to Mexico, 23.6 per cent increase, China, with 15.2 per cent and Turkey up 3.4 per cent.

Last month, the Airports Commission recommended an expansion at Heathrow, while the airport claims this "closed" the debate whether the new runway should be built.

The Commission announced that Heathrow's new expansion plan can be accomplished while reducing local and environmental impacts. It added that the expansion at Heathrow is the only way to help British businesses compete in the global market and sustain a national recovery based on exports and investment.

New analysis in the Airports Commission’s final report finds that expansion at Heathrow delivers the greatest competition benefits for passengers.

"On the first of July, the Airports Commission ended the debate on where a new runway should be built by unanimously endorsing Heathrow's new expansion plan," said John Holland-Kaye said, Heathrow chief executive.

"It's now a binary choice for the British Government.

"We either expand Heathrow – creating jobs, growth, a rebalanced economy and lucrative export routes – or we do nothing and retreat as a nation.

"The answer is obvious, so let's get on with it," added Holland-Kaye.
