Mantis invest R75m on boutique hotel at Liliesleaf farm

Local hotel magnate and Mantis CEO, Adrian Gardiner aims to mark one of the famous events in turbulent pre-democracy history of the country with his latest development project – a R75 million boutique hotel at the site of the famous Liliesleaf farm.  Liliesleaf and the subsequent raid – is uniquely connected with the Rivonia Trail which focused world attention on South Africa –  came to represent and symbolise the essence of the liberation struggle. The media surrounding the Rivonia Trial and the harsh sentencing of 8 of the 10 accused catapulted the atrocities of the apartheid system permanently onto the international stage.  The 10 trialists consisting of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Dennis Govan Mbeki, Dennis Goldberg, James Kantor, Lionel Bernstein,  Andrew Mlangeni, Elais Motsoaledi, Ahmed Kathrada and Raymond Mhlaba became international icons for the struggle against an oppressive regime.  Arthur Goldreich and Harold Wolpe (a leading member of the SACP) escaped the sentencing by breaking out of Marshall Square in Johannesburg after bribing a police officer. Their escape was symbolically very important, as it showed the Apartheid government that the raid has not “crushed” the ANC as a viable liberation movement. (more…)

Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, revamps sea-facing suites

In keeping with the climate of change, the recently renamed Radisson Blu Hotel in Cape Town has refurbished eleven sea-facing suites as well as all fifty-seven Business Class rooms.

Not only are they exceptionally contemporary and stylish, but each luxurious suite has been geared towards minimizing wastage by way of design. In order to be economical and environmentally friendly, each suite has been fitted with water efficient baths and shower heads, keeping water usage to a minimum without taking from the experience. Fitted energy saving low-watt light bulbs, paired with power-cutting access key cards enable electricity usage to be kept to an absolute minimum. Apart from that, the balcony door sensors ensure that the air conditioning unit is deactivated when they are opened.

Christopher Pike, General Manager: Radisson Blu Cape Town adds, “The Rezidor Hotel Group is committed to good environmental practices and continues to incorporate this wherever possible. Here at the Cape Town Hotel, these luxury suites and rooms are the ultimate get-away, boasting unparalleled views of the breathtaking Atlantic seaboard and Robben Island.

Other amenities include movies on demand, which can be viewed on the brand new 42” LCD screens fitted in each lounge area, as well as the smaller 32” LCD screens in each bedroom.

Commenting on the idea behind the look and feel, Paul Luck from Arkiteckto Lightspace said, “Our challenge was to create a hotel experience which matched the uniqueness of the location.  Fresh colours, quality materials and an exciting blend of modern and classic design elements have been combined to give the guest the ultimate experience of luxury.”

Amarula adds glamour to domestic departure lounge at Cape Town International Airport

Amarula, the worlds leading cream, is bringing African hospitality to the new Cape Town International Airport, which was launched earlier this month. Domestic Departures received an extensive revamp with a new cosy, afro-centric lounge which embodies the world class brand – creating a welcome space for local and international visitors.

Travellers in transit are entertained with plasma screens with the latest Amarula news and with the new stylish Rhapsody’s positioned directly opposite the lounge, guests can sip comfortably on the Spirit of Africa.

Making use of bold wooden stumps, textured couches and embroidered ottomans; the lounge adds to the new look of the airport building. “What better way than to enjoy an Amarula on ice when waiting for your next flight, especially if you can do so in comfort,” commented Werner Swanepoel, Group Marketing Manager for Amarula. “The lounge offers another unique opportunity for consumers to interact with the brand and as an official licensed product for the forthcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup, it’s great to give locals and visitors a taste of what’s to come.”

The lounge is open to all travellers passing through the domestic departure terminals and they are encouraged to come and experience the Spirit of Africa.
