What is a 12 months contract, when it’s actually indefinite?

1 Nov

You’ll pardon me as this is not related to travel and tourism, however I’m interested to know your opinion in this regard.

I signed a 12 months membership contract Virgin Active in Horizon View (Roodepoort) last year. In September it reached the 12 months period and therefore I did not expect to have my debit order going through in October, knowing the 12 months has been completed already.

However I noticed that the debit order went off my account for October, now I called Virgin Active to find out why this is the case and was informed, the contract doesn’t expire after the initial 12 months period that I signed for, it goes onto auto renewal.

Apparently I needed to send them a letter of cancellation a month before it reached the expiry date. Since I did not send that cancellation letter, it means it’s still active indefinitely.

My question is, why then does Virgin Active sell a 12 months contracts, when in reality it’s not a 12 months contract, but a lifetime contract?

I’m not a Virgin Active customer or employee, I do not have any experience with them and don’t plan to. I stumbled across this post.

It would seem as though you’ve come across a “rolling contract” with a “minimum term”. Google these words to find out more, they’re quite common. I suggest you express your wish to cancel immediately and pay your way until they let you go.

I may be wrong as your post is quite short and simple.

    All the best.

Hi, luckily I did have it my way after publishing this post and my account was discountinued. But this is really a rip-off to others who don’t checkout their bank statements and keep on paying for something there are no longer using.
