Eastern Cape Tourism hosts Miss World beauty queens
The Eastern Cape will see 120 of the worlds most beautiful women getting down and dirty when they descend on the Eastern Cape later this week to participate in the “Miss World Sport” leg of the Miss World Competition next week.
Hosted by the Eastern Cape Tourism Board (ECTB), the beauties will participate in various sporting activities, including a gladiator course, adventure zone, a relay race and archery – where they will accumulate points for the competition.
As the 2010 World Cup fever intensifies, the Walmer High School girls’ soccer team will play an exhibition match and they will also be involved in the soccer format for the elimination round of the games.
“Getting the community involved in this event is a great way of spreading the benefit of the province hosting the Miss World competitors. We as ECTB want to ensure that it is not only big and established business that benefit but also women and children,” said ECTB Chief Executive Officer, Zola Tshefu.
Beneficiaries from the event include the Vistarus Haven, a shelter for unemployed families, which will benefit from funds raised from some of the Miss World contestants’ activities while in the province. A 14 year old girl from Patensie will be hand decorating over 220 sets of teaspoons, as gifts to be presented to the participants and their entourage. The residents of Cheshire Homes will assist with tagging of these gifts. A group from the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth will perform at the farewell function- showcasing their talent to an international audience and enabling the Miss World group to lend their support to our local talent.
Charity is a major component of Miss World, with its “Beauty for a Purpose” theme finding resonance in the many international causes for which it raises funds. In Africa, Miss World has donated millions of rands to charities such as Operation Hunger and the Nelson Mandela Trust.
“The Eastern Cape Tourism Board was lucky to have bagged the rights to host an event of this magnitude. This is a great opportunity for the province and the people of the Eastern Cape to speak to audiences that we would otherwise never have had access to. With four different television crews following the event, the amount of media coverage that we come about as a result of us having hosted Miss World is monumental,” said Tshefu.
Now in its 59th year, the Miss World competition is the world’s biggest annual television event. The global television audience of this event is more than a billion viewers.
Audiences across the world can expect a spectacular entertainment extravaganza, starring the world’s most beautiful women and showcasing some of the Eastern Cape’s offerings, with product owners offering ECTB some complimentary excursions as part of the day tours that the contestants will be participating in.
Hosting the Miss World contestants carries much prestige and opportunity for the Eastern Cape and promotes the country globally, with the positive spin-offs from this event including tourism, investment and economic development.
The Miss World final will take place at place on the the 12 December at Gallagher Estates in Johannesburg.
