Plett Game Reserve unveils refurbished rooms and new website

Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve, the biggest game reserve in the Southern Cape, has opened the last of its refurbished suites and, at the same time, launched its new website, www.plettgamereserve.com.

Situated just 12 km from Plettenberg Bay, one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations, the reserve boasts over 2 000 ha of prime land on the Garden Route, an abundance of wildlife and facilities for both day and overnight visitors.

According to owner Leon de Kock, the reserve offers “an exciting child-friendly safari experience in a non-malaria area with an excellent chance of spotting four of Africa’s Big Five – buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino.

“With our newly decorated rooms we now offer superb overnight accommodation in the 4-star Baroness Luxury Safari Lodge, a colonial-style lodge which was built from local stone in 1822 by Baron von Pletten, an early South African pioneer and conservationist, who used the original, smaller lodge as his base to explore the region.”

The Lodge has 10 individually decorated rooms, a plunge pool, a semi-enclosed dining room, lounge and library, and a large boma with a bar and deck built over the dam.

Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and original polished cement or yellowwood floors. The décor is eclectic and colourful with antiques, giant candelabra and chandeliers mixing effortlessly with leather couches, kilim floor rugs and animal skins. Romantic four poster beds are draped with gossamer fabric mosquito nets and dressed with cotton linen and chenille or faux-fur throws. All rooms have showers and freestanding bathtubs, some with views across the indigenous forests.

The reserve has over 35 species of game, including rhino, giraffe, hippo, crocodiles, buffalo and a large variety of antelope roaming free in their natural habitat, which is also home to 101 different bird species. It is the biggest sanctuary in the area for the endangered white rhino.

Visitors can choose a big game viewing experience in an open 4×4 vehicle or a guided horseback safari.

Facilities for day visitors include a curio shop, a coffee shop and well-stocked bar where an all-day menu of light meals and snacks is served. Guests can dine alfresco next to the children’s play area or, on cooler days, in front of the fire.
