‘Soweto Bites’ to add unique township flavours at Good Food & Wine Show

This month’s Gauteng Good Food & Wine Show (29 October to 1 November) will celebrate the explosion of Soweto’s exciting restaurant scene with Soweto Bites which will showcase the talents of local Sowetan chefs as they prepare their restaurants’ signature dishes and share their expertise with visitors.

Five Sowetan restaurants will be at the show offering their own unique flavours, experiences and entertainment.

Sakhumzi Restaurant in the heart of Soweto is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Gauteng. Owned by Sakhumzi Maqubela, the restaurant is situated in Valikazi Street, seats 120 indoors and 250 outdoors and specialises in African Cuisine dishes including papa (pap) umngqusho (samp) and idombolo (dumplings).

Kwanza Soul Food is situated in the Maponya Mall and serves all the traditional favourites.  It also boasts one of the most popular cocktail bars in the area.

Kwa-Thabeng is a premier restaurant in Soweto and represents a fusion between a shebeen (tavern) and a modern township experience combining good food, wine spirits and fun.

The Mandela Restaurant owned by Zoleka and Zinzi Mandela is across the road from Mandela House in Soweto. They are very proud of their specialty dish which is a ‘quarter’ – try one at the show!

Chez Alina is tucked away in a residential street in a large converted garage. Deliciously different salads are on offer from mixed bean to sweet tomato and onion. The buffet is African dining at its best.

All tastings from participating restaurants at Soweto Bites will be paired with signature Nederburg wines.

The Good Food & Wine Show, South Africa’s biggest and longest running interactive food and wine show takes place at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate from 29 October to 1 November. Victors will be able to taste a wide variety of food and wine, watch local and international chefs in action, participate in a number of hands-on workshops and catch the very latest lifestyle trends.
