The River Club joins Eco Luxury Retreat group
The River Club in Zambia has recently been privileged to join a group of carefully selected lodges around the world known as Eco Luxury Retreats. Eco Luxury (www.ecoluxury.com) is a concept that seeks to find the world’s best retreats that combine all that is eco with all that is luxury. Its strict criteria guarantee that the properties are focused and committed to the community or ecological projects they support. Criteria include community involvement, wildlife, architecture and design, energy and initiatives, local businesses and recycling.
One key focus of the concept is that guests are encouraged to see and encounter community projects in which the lodges are involved, thus ensuring a more fulfilling holiday experience. In this case, The River Club’s long involvement in, and support of, the nearby Simonga Village meets this criterion perfectly.
Since 2000, The River Club has been closely involved with Simonga Village, carrying out a range of projects funded by the generous donations of River Club guests in conjunction with the Wilderness Safaris Wildlife Trust. Focus areas to date have been water (since 2006, the water project has provided 50 000 litres of water per day to Simonga’s inhabitants), sanitation, health, education and income generation. The long association between The River Club and Simonga Village is an excellent example of how the futures of rural communities and ecotourism ventures are intertwined.
The River Club is proud to join other Wilderness Safaris camps – Vumbura Plains, Selinda and Zarafa camps in Botswana, Kulala Wilderness Camp in Namibia, Pafuri Camp in South Africa and North Island in the Seychelles – in being an Eco Luxury Retreat.
