Cape Town Tourism welcomes Destination Expo to the mother city
Cape Town’s new Destinations Expo will be held in the city from 22-25 October 2009 and is the perfect platform to promote and boost your tourism business.
Minister of tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, recently said at a Sho’t Left domestic marketing event that “The short-haul and domestic tourism markets are proving to be very lucrative and valuable to South Africa and, consequently, these markets must be nurtured and developed” Van Schalkwyk also said that the domestic market was a vital foundation on which to build the tourism industry, and SA could not rely solely on international markets. According to South African Tourism statistics, there was a 7% growth in 2008 arrivals. In terms of domestic tourism, 14 million South Africans travelled domestically in 2008, which is one million more than in 2007. Although the number of trips declined by 8% to 2007, the total annual spend on domestic tourism in 2008 increased in real terms by 17% to R25.8 billion.
Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, says: “Cape Town Tourism welcomes the inaugural Destination Expo to Cape Town, lifestyle capital of Africa and Host City for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The promotion of African and South African destinations to the local market is key to sustainable tourism growth. We will be using the platform to engage with visiting trade and
encouraging them to explore our iconic city during their stay, ensuring that they are able to enthusiastically promote Cape Town to their various markets. Consumers visiting the show will be treated to elements of our World Cup count-down and citizen activation campaign – Live it! Love it! Louder! The campaign aims to stimulate civic pride and a welcoming spirit among Capetonians in the run up to, during and beyond the international football extravaganza.”
“It is certain that locals still enjoy breakaways and holidays, although shorter and closer to home. Now is the perfect time to sow your marketing seeds on local grounds, and the Destinations Expo in Cape Town is the perfect platform to do just that. The timing is perfect, just before the local summer holidays and the 2010 Soccer World Cup” said Chris de Klerk organiser of the show.
Exhibitor space is available and tourism businesses should book their stands soonest. Call CADEK Media on 021 855 4750.

My name is Muzi Mohale a full-time travel blogger, your host at Travelwires.com responsible for all editorial on this blog. I blog about the travel and tourism industry in Africa. Apart from blogging about tourism, I also run

After 30 years in South Africa’s Tourism and Hospitality industries, my work caused me to live in the U.K. Here, I am constantly on the look out for reports on South Africa. Anything from Travelogues to blog sites or readers’letters, and I often respond with comments or suggestions. What is of particular concern to me, is the lack of advertising and marketing by South Africa’s official agency SA Tourism. Tourists around the world are confronted with a wide choice of offers, and only those countries which aggressively and attractively market themselves will attract visitors. Being suitably qualified and experienced I have written to SA Tourism on many occasions, offering my services in any capacity. Sadly, not a single response has been received! Can anyone suggest a way to contact SA Tourism. Your comments are eagerly awaited.
Yours faithfully
