Bushmans Kloof bags top Diners Club Winelist Award five times in a row
Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat has been named one of only 40 Diamond Awards in South Africa, in the prestigious 2009 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year competition.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that the wine list of this award-winning lodge, recently named Best Hotel in the World in the 2009 US Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards readers’ survey, has been recognised amongst South Africa’s top restaurant wine lists. It is also the second year that Bushmans Kloof attained an overall score above 90%, notwithstanding much more stringent judging criteria, and a marked increase in the number of restaurants participating this year.
Sister property, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Camps Bay, performed equally well, with its Azure Restaurant also scooping a Diamond Award. Together with the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, which is opening on the 1st of October 2009, both Bushmans Kloof and The Twelve Apostles Hotel form part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection.
There were four judging criteria categories for 2009, namely content (35%), balance (30%), suitability (10%) and presentation (25%). Content includes the number of wines on the list, number of wines served by the glass, original and innovative choices and cultivars sourced from appropriate regions. Balance relates to a balance between modestly and expensively priced wines, overall value, presence of local and imported varieties, and balance between established and new labels. Suitability measures the match of the wine list with the cuisine, as well as the fit with the image of the restaurant, and the category of presentation. Judges also verify that the printed wine list shows vintages, regions, accurate information, correct spelling and that the design is clear, and easy to read and navigate.
Bushmans Kloof’s winning wine list was compiled by Food & Beverage Manager James Basson, together with Wine Concepts. Augmenting the superb wine list at this award-winning lodge, is a menu bursting with fresh, home style Cape Contemporary Cuisine that features selected home grown fruit and vegetables from the lodge gardens. Signature dishes proudly showcase the regional cuisine, incorporating ingredients from the indigenous Rooibos and Fynbos plants, found growing in abundance in the Cederberg region. This is complemented by selected traditional Cape Malay flavours, to provide an authentic South African dining experience.
Bushmans Kloof has also announced the introduction of an exclusive selection of rare French wines from the owners’ private cellar. A limited number of bottles have been made available on the Bushmans Kloof wine list, including Chateaux Rothschild (1986 and 1989), Chateaux Margaux (1983 and 1986) and Chateaux Brane-Cantonac (1989).
This internationally renowned 5-star luxury ecological oasis was recently named global winner of Wildlife Conservations Programs (2009) in the Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards. Located at the foothills of the breathtaking Cederberg mountains, just 270 kms from Cape Town, it is a safe haven for diverse wildlife and ancient Bushman rock art. Here majestic views, invigorating outdoor activities, luxurious accommodation, award-winning cuisine and a holistic wellness experience, deeply rooted in nature, combine to create an unforgettable, luxury wilderness adventure.
