Bushmans Kloof bags ‘World Savers Award 2009’
South Africa’s Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat has been named Global Winner of Wildlife Conservations Programs (2009) in the prestigious third annual Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards. This honour was bestowed in recognition of its exceptional wildlife conservation projects and the replenishment of wildlife in the area. These include providing a sanctuary for the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and Clanwilliam Yellow Fish, its support of the Cape Mountain Leopard project and the Clanwilliam Cedar Tree project, as well as for its efforts in clearing alien vegetation.
The exclusive Relais & Châteaux retreat, 270km north of Cape Town, has also just been voted the Best Hotel in the World in the 2009 US Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards readers’ survey.
The World Savers Awards are an initiative of the internationally acclaimed Condé Nast Traveler magazine, recognized globally as the ultimate guide to the world’s finest properties and cruise lines. The awards honour the travel companies that are making a difference in areas of poverty alleviation, health, education, wildlife conservation and environmental or cultural preservation. The results of the prestigious awards are published in the September 2009 issue of Condé Nast Traveler, which will be available on newsstands on Tuesday August 25.
The award will be presented to Bushmans Kloof during the third annual World Savers Congress on September 21, in New York City (USA). The Congress is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s ongoing efforts to encourage the travel industry to do more to address issues of global poverty, health, education, and environmental depredation, by introducing major travel industry players to organizations and resources that will assist them to implement more effective programs worldwide.
Bushmans Kloof is a luxurious ecological oasis of 18 533 acres (7500 hectare), nestled at the foothills of the breathtaking Cederberg mountains, where majestic views, staggering rock formations, open plains, invigorating outdoor activities, luxurious accommodation, award-winning Cape cuisine and soothing spa treatments combine to create an unforgettable, luxury wilderness adventure. Less than three hours’ drive from Cape Town, it is unequivocally recognised as a conservation success story. In 2007 the reserve was awarded the Relais & Châteaux Environment Trophy, and the following year it was listed among National Geographic Adventure Magazine Top 50 Eco Lodges (2008).
Malaria and predator free, Bushmans Kloof is a sanctuary for many indigenous plants, animals and birds, including the endangered Cape mountain zebra. It is also home to over 130 San rock art sites, is recognized as one of South Africa’s Natural Heritage Sites, and is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. It bases its entire business ethos on preserving the precious natural environment, while providing guests with the ultimate African wilderness experience.
Bushmans Kloof stands as a true conservation success story and the owners, management and staff will continue their dedication and commitment to preserving the natural environment and heritage for generations to come.
