Johannesburg’s business elite, socialites and top media descended on Rosebank at the official rechristening of the city’s top cosmopolitan hotel on Friday. Amid music, the bright lights and ceremony, the Crown Plaza Johannesburg – The Rosebank was relaunched. Hospitality Property Fund Chief Executive Officer Gerald Nelson, and Director of Operations, Luke Sacco was on hand to welcome the guests at the stylish hotel in Rosebank, heart of Johannesburg business district. An ice sculpture of a globe atop the Crowne Plaza logo took centre stage at the entrance of the Dalasi room, where the function was held. Taupe and Burgundy colours set off the elegant white settees, couches and cocktail stools.
The theme was decidedly continental as the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) marked the official return of its upmarket Crowne Plaza brand to Africa’s business capital and centre of the continent’s financial muscle. A kimono-clad dancer swept through the room to the sound of Japanese music. Four girls in traditional African prints and Xhosa make-up then sashayed to 1950s style Afro jazz before giving up the dance floor to euro/western beats for the rest of the night.
Guests were treated to a sumptuous array of food from across the continents, starring European, African and Middle East influences. The sushi bar proved a hit as did the delicious canapés featuring lobster and duck and baked brie in phyllo with green fig and port Syrup desert. In between the merriment the hotel’s general manager, Trevor Latimer explained the essence of the Crowne Plaza brand.
“This hotel is on par with the best in the world. We have complied with IHG’s stringent safety and security regulations and our staff has been trained and their skills upgraded to global best practise,” Latimer said. ”We reached compliance with IHG standards in record time, testimony to the high standards at the hotel.”
Latimer also used the occasion to launch the Crowne Plaza’s Sleep Advantage Programme, the first for IHG hotels in the Middle East and Africa region. The programme consists of sleep products and quiet zones which all combine to give guests quality sleep.
IHG is the world’s largest and fastest-growing hotel group with 4 150 hotels and more than 620,000 rooms in nearly 100 countries. It incorporates the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites brands.
Crowne Plaza, the group’s premium brand offering, has 320 hotels in 50 countries with another 130 being developed.
“We offer our guests the tools necessary to help create an optimal sleep experience including our sleep amenities which aromatic pillow sprays to promote relaxation and our beds and pillows are of premium quality to ensure maximum comfort,” Latimer told guests.
Celebrities attending the launch included 7 de laan’s Freedom Hadebe, Real Goboza’s Kuli Roberts. Trends Analyst Dion Chang and musicians, RJ and Skwatta Kamp’s Shugasmax.
