Innibos Arts Festival to honour Jamie Uys

Mention the name Jamie Uys, and the first reaction will be: The Gods must be Crazy. But that is only one of his wonderful movies. Jamie Uys was one of the most important role players to set up the South African film industry and with his movies he always shared his joy de vivre with his audience.  In fact, Uys was one of the first South African film makers to be internationally acclaimed with his film Beautiful People, which centres around the almost human-like behaviour  of wildlife in the Kalahari and Namib deserts. The film won a Golden Globe as Best Documentary Film in 1975.

In later years his film, The Gods must be Crazy, also received rave reviews on the international circuit. The story revolves around Xi and his fellow bushmen. For five thousand years, things have stayed the same for them. Then one day, an empty Coke bottle drops magically from the sky, and life goes topsy-turvy in the face of this generous ‘gift of the Gods’. When Xi sets off to return the mystical present, he encounters a romantic microbiologist, a school teacher and a band of terrorists all enmeshed in a plot so insane, it could only happen in a ‘civilized’ world.

In honour of his legacy, the Innibos Arts Festival, which takes place in Nelspruit from 1 to 5 July,  presents the Jamie Uys Film Festival. The golden oldies that will be shown every day, for the duration of the festival, include: Die professor en die prikkelpop, Dirkie, Beautiful People, Funny People I and II and The Gods must be Crazy I and II.

The Bush Bioscope is located in the old Gymnasium Hall on the Festival terrain. Here you can sit back, relax and reminisce the good old days of the bioscope. Entrance is free and the whole family is invited.
