Botanical breaks at Bushmans Kloof

In August (2009), Dr Penny Mustart, well-known member of the Botanical Society, will share her remarkable knowledge and love for the unique landscape of the Cederberg wilderness area during four special botanical events to be held at Bushmans Kloof. Here guests will discover the botanical richness of this magical reserve situated at the very heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Her stimulating presentations and memorable veld excursions will bring to life some 755 indigenous plant species that have been identified in the reserve, representing three major biomes (Fynbos, Forest and Succulent Karoo).  Guests are invited to explore and experience the diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and learn how each variety (or species) has a fascinating story to tell.

Dr Mustart will also introduce some highly endangered plant species, two of which have been named as part of Bushmans Kloof’s own Special Collection of plants that occur on the Reserve: the Clanwilliam Cedar tree Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, and Rocket Pincushion Leucospermum reflexum. Depending on winter rainfall and the weather conditions at the time, the August Botanical Breaks should also provide guests with the opportunity to experience the legendary annual spring flower spectacular, which usually starts towards late winter or early spring, and that sees areas in the reserve carpeted in white, yellow and orange flowers that may stretch as far as the eye can see.

The botanical events are aimed at anyone who is interested in learning more about the unique flora and fynbos that thrive within this 7500 hectare reserve – how some plants may be used for an array of beneficial purposes, what it means in terms of conservation, and how it survives in this harsh environment of summer droughts and bush fires.

Bushmans Kloof is a conservation success story and is also a safe haven to over 35 species of mammals and over 150 kinds of birds. In recognition of its exceptional environmental and conservation projects, Bushmans Kloof was awarded the esteemed Relais & Châteaux Environment Trophy 2007.   The reserve is custodian to one of the world’s largest open-air rock art galleries, a legacy of the rich culture of the ancient San, and is recognized as an SA Natural Heritage site for its immense historical and botanical significance.

A Forbes Traveler 400 Best Hotels (2008/9) and Condé Nast Traveler Gold List Best Hotels in the Middle East & Indian Ocean (2009), the beautifully styled Relais and Chateaux lodge is an oasis of beauty, luxury and comfort, with rolling lawns, exquisite gardens, and refreshing swimming pools. Luxury accommodation, warm, personal service, delicious contemporary Cape cuisine and pampering spa treatments make this an indulgent wilderness escape.
