North West Parks & Tourism Board hosts 7th annual Heritage Park Walk
North West Parks and Tourism Board and World Wild Life Fund ( WWF) will once again host the 7th annual Heritage Park Walk from Madikwe Game Reserve to Pilanesberg National Park from the 4th – 7th June 2009. The NWPTB and WWF are in partnership in the Heritage Park Rhino project.
The Heritage Park (HP) aims to link Pilanesberg National Park (Pilanesberg) with Madikwe Game Reserve (Madikwe) by creating a conservation corridor. The key goals are to increase tourism products, the range for wildlife and most importantly to improve the quality of life of the local communities who form part of the Heritage Park corridor.
When the Heritage Park was conceived and approved by the North West legislature and the need was identified for ongoing engagement of affected stakeholders, the North West Parks Tourism Board (NWPTB) came up with a Heritage Park Walk in 2003, aimed at creating awareness among the general public but most especially among the communities residing along the periphery of both Pilanesberg and Madikwe and along the Heritage Park corridor.
The Heritage Park Walk has gained popularity over the years and because of great participation and support from the communities from 2003, a decision was taken to host the walk annually. The 135 km Heritage Park Walk 2009 will take a total of 5 walking days and 5 camping nights starting on 4th June Madikwe Game Reserve ( Batlokwa ) and will end in ( Bakgatla – Ba-Kgafela) Pilanesberg National Park on 9th June 2009. The number of walkers (including support staff) is limited to 300. All walkers should sleep at Camp 0 on 4th June for final administration and briefing during the evening before departure. Participation fee is R200.00 per person. All participants should bring their own gear e.g. tents, sleeping bags, cutlery and crockery, special drinks and medicines etc.
The objectives of the Heritage Park Walk 2009 are to:
- Increase awareness and interest amongst local communities about the Heritage Park
- Celebrate the Mining Collaboration
- Celebrate World Environment Day, 5th June
- Increase interest among local communities and other role-players in hiking, camping and outdoor adventure
- Seek potential sponsors and partners for the walk
- Market the North West Province as an affordable eco-adventure destination in South Africa.
The walk will be conducted on a carefully charted route in the wilderness
