South Africa triumphs at World’s Top 100 Best Restaurants Awards 2009

South African Tourism has congratulated five restaurants that have achieved a place in the annual S. Pellegrino 100 World’s Best Restaurant Awards – an internationally acclaimed annual event universally recognised as acknowledging the very places on earth to eat out.

The acknowledged South African restaurants are Le Quartier Francais in Franschoek (37th place and named best restaurant in the Middle East and Africa); La Colombe in Constantia (38th place); Jardine’s in Cape Town (79th place); Aubergine in Cape Town (96th place); and Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch (98th place).

Didi Moyle, acting CEO at South African Tourism congratulated each restaurant. “This is a fantastic achievement not only for these establishments, but also for our destination,” she said. “South Africa positions itself globally as a destination of superb and varied dining and wining. These awards give the world’s gastronomes evidence that South Africa really is a delicious destination.”

A restaurant’s ranking on the S. Pellegrino World’s 100 Best Restaurant list is purely decided on the votes of a large panel of well respected international judges collectively called Nespresso World’s 100 Best Restaurants Academy. The Academy comprises chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and restaurant critics.

  1. Great choices – and what isn’t mentioned in the article is the fact that all 5 are in Cape Town – so you don’t even need to travel far in South Africa to get to them. I do get the feeling that they focussed more on the cuisine than on other aspects of the restaurant – e.g. if views came into the equation, surely the 12 Apostles restaurant would come into the running?
