Qatar Airways backs Everest mountaineers

Many people refer to the challenges they face in their lives as their own personal Mount Everest. Over the next three months, three men have made Mount Everest their personal challenge and with the help of Qatar Airways are going to climb the world’s highest peak.

“For us, it is extremely important to become involved with initiatives that represent the same values as our brand, such as service excellence, commitment to hard work and perseverance. We believe that the three men who have embarked on this journey epitomise those three criteria, which is why we are so proud to be involved in the climbing initiative,” explains Greg Epps, Qatar Airways’ South African Country Manager, “We are more then happy to able to help John Black, Gilad Stern and Robby Kojetin in making the summit and are pleased to be able to play our part in making their climbing dream a reality.”

The team who will be climbing the mountain are just as excited as Epps. “This has been a dream of mine for the last 12 years and the three of us have been actively planning our expedition for the last 4 years; the fact that we’re actually doing it is unbelievable,” says John Black, one of the mountaineers.

All three men are experienced climbers and have summited peaks around the world. “Every climber’s goal is to climb Everest. As the highest mountain in the world, Everest is revered and we are looking forward to putting our mountaineering expertise to the challenge.”

Not just content to climb for his own achievement, Robby is climbing Mount Everest in order to raise funds and awareness for CHOC, aiding children affected by cancer.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, as measured by the height above sea level of its summit being 8,848 metres. The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in High Asia, is located on the border between Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal, and Tibet, China. The team’s journey starts with an 11 day walk to base camp, which will aid them in acclimatising before they embark on the south route up the mountain.

“We are grateful for the assistance provided to us by Qatar Airways,” says Black. “We approached them for two reasons. As one of the world’s 5-star carriers, they have an outstanding service reputation, which we knew we could rely on to get us and our mountain of equipment to Nepal. Their outstanding onboard service and legroom would also allow for us to arrive well rested and ready to conquer Everest. Secondly they are the only airline to have frequent flights to Nepal, which means that we could fly to Nepal when we wanted to and return to South Africa once we have finished our climb without having to wait a few days for the next flight.”

Qatar Airways is the only 5 star Gulf airline and from its hub in Doha, fly to over 80 destinations worldwide. The airline flies one of the youngest and most modern fleet of aircraft in the skies today. Their commitment is to provide travellers with the highest quality of service both in the air and on the ground.

“We are eagerly awaiting the mountaineers’ return and have not doubt that these three remarkable men will reach their target. We wish them every success in their adventure,” concludes Epps.
