Singita unveils overnight horseback safaris
Tanzania – Singita Game Reserves will introduce its first East African overnight horseback safaris this month (February 2009). The luxurious 4-night safaris will offer experienced riders unparalleled horse riding and game viewing in Tanzania’s Singita Grumeti Reserves. Situated along the Western corridor of the Serengeti, this is one of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas, and scene of Africa’s thrilling annual wildebeest migration.
The guided horseback safaris will be available throughout the year, with the exception of the wet seasons (1 April to 15 May and 1 November to 15 December). The itinerary will include two nights at flagship lodge Singita Sasakwa, the only member of Relais and Chateaux in East Africa, as well as two nights at Singita Faru Faru.
Departing from Singita Sasakwa, where riders will be kitted out at the state-of-the-art Equestrian Centre, a maximum of six riders will go out on safari, accompanied by two seasoned guides. Over the next three days their journey will take them through the vast, game-rich plains of the Grumeti Reserve where up close and personal sightings and magnificent wildlife encounters await.
Equestrian Manager for Singita Grumeti Reserves, Alison Mundy says: ‘We have 18 well-schooled horses stabled at Singita Sasakwa consisting of Thoroughbreds, various cross breeds and nine South African Boerperde – a breed known for its outstanding temperament and comfortable paces, making them ideal for longer horseback safaris.’
The horseback safari will include, on the day of arrival, a short orientation ride across the plains. This will be followed by sundowners at the magnificent Equestrian Pavilion, dinner and overnight at the luxurious Sasakwa lodge.
The next morning riders will depart for their 2-night stay at Faru Faru Lodge. The four to five hour ride will cross the magnificent grasslands and savannah of the Sasakwa Plains, arriving in time for lunch and a siesta. Here riders may while away the afternoon with a choice of another ride in the afternoon, a relaxing massage or a sunset game drive.
On Day Three guests will arise early for an invigorating ride along the banks of the Grumeti River – the forest abuzz with abundantly diverse bird life and game, including the rare black and white Colobus monkeys. Then, return to Faru Faru with its poolside Swahili-style beach offering welcome respite from the heat, and a second night in the laid-back sophistication of the lodge overlooking a watering hole with frequent sightings of the Big 5. On the final day riders will head back on horseback to arrive at Sasakwa at midday, where the last night of the 4-night safari will be spent.
