FEDHASA Cape supports proposed by-laws

Cape Town – FEDHASA has always promoted responsible drinking and fully supports efforts to curb excessive drinking of alcohol, adherence to age restrictions, as well as the regulation of illegal liquor outlets. The FEDHASA Code of Conduct binds our members to adopt responsible practices with regard to their products, trading hours and adopt responsible service of alcohol toward their patrons.
FEDHASA Cape believes that the proposed by-law motivated by the City Of Cape Town Liquor Task Team will most certainly have other unintended consequences.”
The proposed by-laws:

  • Do not deal with the root-cause of the issues they may have been intended and will not deliver the desired results
  • Will significantly create unemployment, impact negatively on the core businesses of hospitality as well as severely tarnish the attractiveness of Cape Town as a world class destination.
  • Will likely become effective in the months leading up to the 2010 Africa World Cup Soccer and will contribute to Cape Town becoming a city to be avoided. This will have a further effect on tourism enterprises in other areas of the Western Cape and Garden route. The wine industry will most certainly feel the repercussions and job losses will be extended further than the city boundaries.
  • The wording of the proposed by-law suggests it will not restrict the consumption of alcohol after trading hours, only the sale of alcohol, which will result in guests either bringing their own alcohol or ordering large quantities in advance leading to binge drinking.
  • Are archaic and will regress the progress made in South Africa over the past 15 years and are reminiscent of past practices.

FEDHASA Cape Chairman, Phillip Couvaras says: “There has been no consultation with the private sector or industry players leading up to this proposal and FEDHASA Cape urges the City of Cape Town to withdraw their proposed by-law.”
