Mossel Bay Tourism appoints Debra-Lee Bouwer as new CEO

Garden Route – The board of directors of Mossel Bay Tourism has appointed Debra-Lee Bouwer as its new Chief Executive Officer. Ms Bouwer, who grew up in the town, joined the company as its Marketing Manager at the beginning of this year.

She studied for – and completed – a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Management and Marketing and gained extensive experience both as National Sales Manager for Peugeot Motors South Africa and in senior management positions within the Kempston Group before returning to Mossel Bay.

“We are confident that Debra has the ability to raise Mossel Bay’s position as a first-choice holiday destination,” said Board Chairman Louis Cook.

“In the current economic climate, Mossel Bay remains a value-for-money destination and it will be important to reinforce this message and to build on it – and she has the experience and the necessary tools at her disposal to do this.

“We believe that her ability to draw divergent interests together will serve us in good stead at a time when standing together – rather than competing against one another – will be the hallmark of successful destinations.”

“By using my management experience to introduce improved structure, I intend to build an effective organisation that will serve its members efficiently,” said Ms. Bouwer

“My aim is to increase visitor numbers and length of stay and to reduce seasonality, which is a huge challenge.

“In the run-up to 2010, Mossel Bay has a window of opportunity that will never be repeated, and it’s going to be imperative to grab it and make best use of it – because we may never enjoy this much exposure ever again.

“Effective media management must therefore be a prime focus of my tenure,” she said.

Ms. Bouwer’s appointment took effect on the fifth of November.
