Hilton SA invests in six power generators

Sandton – The Hilton Durban and Sandton recently saw the official unveiling of 6 prime rated generators, two located in Durban, and four on the Sandton premises equipped to carry the full occupancy load of both hotels.

Although South Africa has seen a welcome respite from the power outages that plagued the country in early 2008, it is expected that electrical capacity reserves will not grow faster than the anticipated growth in demand and therefore the unscheduled shedding will continue in to the future.

With an eye on 2010 the hotel group felt that it was vital to install full back-up power at both the Hilton Sandton and the Hilton Durban. “Due to both hotels’ strategic locations within the Sandton CBD and next to the Durban Convention Centre, many international guests as well as local visitors stay at the hotels while conducting business and therefore expect an immediate response to such an inconvenience,” says Axel Hauser, general manager for the Hilton Sandton.

Two prime rated generators with a capacity of 1810kva were installed at the Hilton Durban and four prime-rated generators with a capacity to cater for a maximum load of 1750kva were installed at the Hilton Sandton. To avoid the loud noise created by the generators when in operation, they are stored in soundproof casing at both hotels.

By deciding on a system that is totally dynamic with it’s controllers on a synchronisation panel, the Sandton hotels Building Management Systems will automatically reduce the number of operational generators, only generating the amount of power needed at any time, and therefore minimising the output of carbon monoxide.

“South Africa will be host to a large number of international visitors in the lead up to, and beyond the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We are already taking bookings for 2011 and 2012 and this installation will ensure we are adequately equipped to welcome these guests and cater for their every requirement,” says Gerhard Patzer general manager of the Hilton Durban.

The Hilton Durban stores in excess of 4500 litres of diesel which is equivalent to approximately 60 average vehicle fuel tanks.

During load shedding both hotels are now not only able to accommodate the full load requirement of the entire hotel at maximum occupancy to cater for the regular operation in both hotels but also if requested, to generate additional power into the respective providers’ grid.
