Tourism students host peers on Fashion Show
Auckland Park – Fashion and Jewellery design is a dynamic, rapidly expanding industry providing individuals around the world with an opportunity to earn income and build a business of their own. It has yet to reach its full potential in South Africa, and one of the ways to achieve this growth is through the continuous development of skills. The University of Johannesburg (UJ), however, imparts the skills required for students to market themselves successfully.
The National Diploma Tourism Management students at the UJ, specializing in Events Management, return this year to centre stage with the Around the World Fashion Show at the University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH), Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus on Wednesday, 8 October 2008. Mrs Sizeka Rensburg, wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ihron Rensburg, will be the patron for this event.
This one-of-a-kind fashion show brings together on one ramp the most creative student designers from the Departments of Jewellery and Fashion Design of the UJ Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, showcased by elite models. The show is organized by the students with the aim of fostering awareness of the positive aspects of diversity. The values, traditions and beliefs of local and national cultures as well as national and international collaboration in higher education will be showcased. Furthermore the interdependence and co-operation between UJ, STH and the industry will be highlighted.

Ms Nellie Swart, project coordinator and lecturer in Tourism Management at the UJ, says that this event forms part of the curricula of the national diploma programme that is designed to be more practical. “This project and event provides the students with a unique opportunity to learn about the management of an event in a real-life environment. The experiences derived from this initiative equip students with practical skills and knowledge.” says Miss Swart.
The students of the Somatology Department will be responsible for the make-up of the models for the evening, turning the event into an inter-faculty and inter-departmental project.
Sponsors for the event include Imagology, SAB, Ladies and Wheels Ltd, Aptitude Sport Dance, Sir Juice, SAACI and Thandi Wines.
