Maverick hotel group buys Metropole Hotel
Image by DanieVDM via FlickrCape Town – Maverick hotel group, Daddy Long Legs, has bought the Metropole Hotel in Long Street, Cape Town. Owners, Jody Aufrichtig and Nick Ferguson are renaming it The Grand Daddy and are preparing to infuse the 25 rooms, restaurants and bars with new creative life. Already a big presence on Long Street, Daddy Long Legs jumped at the opportunity to acquire the beautiful old building at 38 Long Street, when it recently came up for sale. “We love Long Street and we think that this hotel building is an intrinsic landmark on the classy side of the street!” comments Aufrichtig. “We are calling it the Grand Daddy out of respect to its elegance and historical charm but also because we want to ensure that our guests get an upmarket experience with a few pleasant surprises. Everyone would love a generous Grand Daddy, this is it.”
The room prices have already been lowered, in keeping with the Daddy Long Legs philosophy that you can charge less and still run a successful hotel. “The Grand Daddy is our deluxe hotel, it has more amenities and luxuries but it is welcoming, warm and friendly”, says Aufrichtig.
The Grand Daddy shares a block with the culturally significant Space Theatre, which is currently enjoying a restoration also at the hands of Aufrichtig and Ferguson. This iconic symbol of struggle theatre was home to some of South Africa’s greatest theatre talents and is certain to bring some interest to this strip, already favoured by some of the City’s art galleries.
The Grand Daddy will be officially relaunched before the end of 2008.
