FEDHASA Cape puts credit card fraud on the table

FEDHASA CapeCape Town – Following the announcement of the latest credit card skimming related arrests, indicating yet another peak in credit card fraud, Chairman of FEDHASA Cape, Nils Heckscher, has called on FEDHASA members, and restaurant owners in particular, to take all the necessary precautions to prevent credit card fraud.  Heckscher says the industry faces many challenges that are difficult to manage, but credit card fraud is manageable.

Last year FEDHASA Cape, together with Business against Crime, organised meetings and presentations, issued tips to all members on ways to deal with the issue, and engaged with banks to come to the industry’s aid in stopping this scourge.

Heckscher says there are still too many restaurant owners who are not heeding the warnings, and have still not invested in portable credit-card machines and other technologies.

“This is how we differentiate professional businesses from the amateurs.  Professional businesses, that have the best interests of the destination and our visitors at heart, will put all the necessary measures in place to show our customers and the public at large that we are able to manage fraud. When we first were confronted with the credit card fraud phenomena we knew very little and did not have much to safeguard ourselves against it. Now we have the technology and the knowledge.  We must take action.”

FEDHASA is the lobbying body and watchdog for the South African hospitality industry nationally, and in all tiers of government on tourism, legislation, trading conditions, taxation, education and related industry issues.  The association services four segments: the Hotel segment, the Small Accommodation segment, Restaurant and Catering segment and the Suppliers segment.
