ACSA set strict service level agreement on new ground handlers
Johannesburg – ACSA has promised to take swift and firm action against Menzies Aviation and BidAir Services if the two new ground handling companies fail to deliver on their contracts with the airports company.Menzies and BidAir took over ground and baggage handling services at 10 ACSA airports last Saturday. It is hoped the companies’ appointment will improve ground handling services and, importantly, lead to a reduction in mishandled and pilfered luggage, especially at O.R Tambo International.
“The primary distinguishing factor between how (previous) ground handlers were managed and how they (BidAir and Menzies) will be, is that ACSA has attached a rigorous and unambiguous Service Level Agreement to the ground handling license – a crucial mechanism to ensure improved service levels are realised,” explained Bongani Maseko, ACSA’s Director of Operations.
He said ACSA would be constantly monitoring the ground handling companies’ and will act against them if performance levels do not match the contractual agreements. The action taken, according to Mr. Maseko, would range from official warnings to the cancellation of operating licenses in the event of severe transgressions.
The new ground handling license includes a mandate to improve airport services in a number of areas, ranging from the introduction of new transfer buses to improving on-time efficiency and better communication with passengers.
To reduce the high mishandled and pilfered luggage levels, BidAir and Menzies have been instructed to jack-up staff screening procedures, post supervisors at baggage handling areas and adhere to best labour practices, among other interventions.
