Johannesburg – “Crawford’s contribution to BARSA and the airline industry in general cannot be over-stated” – Peter Barry, BARSA chairman and gm: Virgin Atlantic Airways June Crawford, CEO of the Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa (BARSA), will step down from her position – which she has filled since her appointment in March 2005 – at the end of this year. This was announced to the executive committee over the weekend by Peter Barry.

BARSA chairman and General Manager of Virgin Atlantic Airways. He said Crawford was asked to stay on beyond the initially agreed two-year contract period (which expired in February 2007) but she declined to extend her contract beyond the end of the year, saying she had successfully fulfilled her mandate and it “was time to move on and pursue other interests”. Barry says: “June Crawford’s contribution to BARSA and the airline industry in general within South Africa over the past two years can not be over-stated.

She has been a role-model for many in the industry and her interaction on behalf of BARSA members in all areas of the aviation and tourism industries has been highly professional and has resulted in establishing BARSA as a key industry body within South Africa. I would personally like to thank her for the support she has given me in my role as chairman and the Executive Committee and wish her the very best for the future.”

“Despite having been asked to sign an extended contract I indicated that I had no intention of holding this position for more than two years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BARSA and thanks are due to both Isabel Hancock (former BARSA chairman) and Peter Barry for creating the positive environment for me to achieve what I have on behalf of the member airlines,” says Crawford.

Crawford will remain on the Board of Aviation Co-Ordination Services (Pty) Ltd. Recruitment for Crawford’s replacement begins in earnest, with applications for the position closing on 24 September. Details of the position are posted on the BARSA website.
