MATCH Hospitality opens lodging registration for World Cup

MATCH, the company appointed by FIFA to deliver the Accommodation and Ticketing solutions for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ announced yesterday the finalization of new agreements for hotel and non-hotel accommodation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The agreements, which were first released to the tourism industry in October 2006, were significantly revised following industry engagement.

The key change includes the MATCH decision to contract small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME) accommodation, including guesthouses and Bed and Breakfast establishments, as accommodation for the 2010 event in South Africa.  In previous FIFA World Cups™, only Hotel accommodation was contracted and promoted by the world body’s accommodation company. Two separate agreements are now available – a Hotel and a Non-Hotel Accommodation Agreement.

Dr Patrick Matlou, the Deputy Director General of Tourism noted, “We are very happy with the progress which has been made in terms of accommodation provision for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.  Inclusion of non-hotel accommodation in the offering will definitely boost the second economy involvement in the world’s biggest sporting event, and will also assist the industry in realising some of the Asgisa (Accelerated Shared Growth Initiatives) targets we have set.”

The changes were agreed to following extensive consultations with accommodation owners around the country at the end of 2006.
World Cup 2010 Hosts

MATCH is the company established by FIFA to manage the provision of accommodation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and changes to the contracts were directed through this organisation. Jaime Byrom, the Executive Co-Chairman of MATCH comments, “MATCH has listened to what accommodation owners had to say during our workshops last year and the contracts have been amended to address many of the comments and concerns raised.  There were calls to adjust room rates and this we have provided for to a degree, as we also wanted to ensure that South Africa is viewed as an affordable value for money destination in terms of accommodation. Unaffordable pricing perceptions would have a detrimental effect on the entire tourism industry in the long term, so we had to be sensible in this regard.”

The changes to the MATCH Non-Hotel Agreement are significant and have been listed in the table below:

All contracted properties will be showcased on the FIFA.com website. As one of the most visited sites in the world with some 4.3 billion page views recorded last year, this is a major opportunity to showcase South Africa’s wide variety of quality accommodation to potential visitors not only for the 2010 event but in the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Mr Byrom adds, “Accommodation is being contracted in each of the nine Host Cities, and in satellite accommodation areas around the host cities. At least 200 rooms are needed to be contracted in an area, e.g. George, for that area to qualify as a MATCH Satellite Accommodation Area. The Tourism industry is urged to work together in regions to ensure you qualify as a satellite area.”

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa is the operational partner with MATCH ensuring that the industry embraces this opportunity.  “The TGCSA has been working with MATCH already to plot both graded and non-graded establishments onto an interactive map around stadiums and host cities for the web-portal.  Through this process we have begun to identify areas of opportunity where insufficient graded rooms are available and will be sending our assessors out to encourage greater participation in those regions,” says Senzeni Ndebele Marketing & Communications Manager of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.

MATCH and the TGCSA have also planned a further road show between June and November this year to all the nine host cities to address any questions around grading and the accommodation agreement that will be signed between the accommodation provider and MATCH.  In addition, SMME’s who would like to register as official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ accommodation providers but are not graded and need financial assistance can apply to TEP (Tourism Enterprise Program) for assistance. The Tourism Enterprise Programme will also be taking part in the road show.  Dates and venues for the road show will be published in due course and communicated to the industry.

The Non-Hotel accommodation contracting is now beginning in earnest, and SMME establishments are requested to sign the Non-Hotel Agreement as a priority.

Interested parties can download the contract from www.tourismgrading.co.za or call the MATCH on 0860 72 2010.  Contracts must be completed and posted back to MATCH at PO Box 4928, Cresta, 2118.

  1. Good day,

I am interested in taking the opportunity for 2010 World cup to serve for accommodation,
My home set-up is a 3 bedroom house,2bathrooms,lapa and braai area at Centurion and my plan is to evacuate to accommodate the match clients. Obviously the house will be nicely prepared for guest hosting.
I would like to know if I can use such a set-up as an opportunity to accommodate match fans next year.

I am also planning to use my vehicle to transport them to the stadiums or wherever the guests would like to go. Please advice what to do with the transportation part of business, and how must I go about to register my house as well please

Your support is very much appreciated.

    Thanks,Jaco
