Sandton Convention Centre score with an award
Sandton – Another top industry Award for Sandton Convention Centre, Southern Africa’s premier convention centre, scooped yet another industry award last week, adding to its already impressive collection for the year. At the Exhibition Association of Southern Africa’s (EXSA) annual awards banquet held on 15 November at Gallagher Estate, the Sandton Convention Centre received the Best Exhibition Venue 2006 award. “This award is truly an honour for Sandton Convention Centre.
In August this year, the convention centre received the TPSA Award as the Best Technical Venue, and last month we received a Diamond Arrow Award from Professional Management Review (PMR) for our contribution to stimulating economic growth within our sector,” says Mati Nyazema, Executive Director of SCC.
“Exhibitions form an integral and very important part of our annual business, and we are delighted with the recognition and endorsement received by the exhibitions industry in South Africa.” The SCC has hosted 25 major exhibitions this year, including Markex, Meetings Africa, Rooms on View, The Home Show, the SABC Education Baba Indaba, RMB WineX, FNB Whisky Live Festival and the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge Expo and Registration.
Exhibitions have attracted in excess of 175 000 visitors to the convention centre over the past year. “In mid-November we hosted the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge Expo and Registration, which was a first, and saw some 25 000 people visiting our building over a three-day period. Another first for us will be the hosting of the world’s major soccer expo, SoccerEx 2007, which will be staged on African soil for the first time in October next year.
We have a three-year contract with SoccerEx, which leads directly into all the activity and excitement around 2010,” says Nyazema. The EXSA Awards recognise the outstanding efforts of its members representing the industry through venues, organisers, exhibition designers, stand builders, service companies and associate organisations during the year, through a stringent judging process. Apart from the Excellence Awards in various categories, the awards also recognise winners of the best Exhibition and Stand Awards.
“The team at Sandton Convention Centre acknowledges this EXSA Award and pledges to strive continually to deliver beyond our clients’ expectations when they bring their exhibitions, events, conferences and meetings to this world-class venue,” concludes Ms Nyazema. ends Editor’s note: Sandton Convention Centre is located in the heart of Sandton’s hotel, business and entertainment district. The centre offers easy access to more than 5 000 hotel rooms (ranging from economy to deluxe), is adjacent to some of the country’s premium shopping and entertainment complexes (Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square), and provides 10 600 secure parking bays. Sandton Convention Centre offers unlimited potential with over 22 000m² of state-of-the-art meeting, exhibition and special event space.
Purpose-built to international standards, the convention centre is able to host meetings, conferences, exhibitions and special events of virtually any size and nature. It offers some of the most advanced technology available for convention and exhibition centres anywhere in the world. Multiple events can be staged simultaneously on four main levels, and 10 000 visitors can be accommodated at any one time. A team of highly-trained staff is on hand to provide support services. Its central position in Sandton provides easy access to Johannesburg International Airport, the Sandton CBD, major hotels and shopping centres.
Sandton Convention Centre is managed by Southern Sun Hotel Interests and was developed by Tsogo Sun, a dynamic partnership between Southern Sun, Africa’s leading hotel group, and Tsogo Sun Investments, a leading black empowerment group.
