German tourists duck payment on guest house
Cape Town – German lesbians Katharina and Jennifer Hieb, who had an in-vitro fertilisation in Cape Town, are in hot water for not paying their bills at a local guest house.
The fertilisation was completed at the weekend as The Citizen reported last week. The couple will know next Tuesday whether or not Katharina is pregnant.
They were in the country with a crew from German television company, Goodtimes, that was filming the procedure for a reality show. But the entourage jetted out of Cape Town on Monday, leaving thousands in unpaid bills.
In terms of the affidavit in possession of The Citizen, leader of the crew Daniel Wolff refused to settle the bill. The owners of the guest house have since opened a case against them at Wynberg police station.
Co-owner Sebastian Schwagele said Wolff simply refused to pay, and referred inquiries to his head office in Germany upon being presented with invoices.
“It is unfair for foreigners to abuse South African hospitality and generosity by refusing to pay for services ,” he said. “And the likelihood of the payment coming all the way from Germany is extremely remote.
“We are in a tricky situation, as the cost of entering into litigation will cost us a vast amount of money in euros.”
