World’s largest Glass Bridge was opened to the public

News

This weekend was an important moment for extreme sensations and heights lovers as there was inaugurated "the biggest and the longest glass bridge in the world” in central China. Although the construction has been completed at the end of last year, the grand opening for the public was much awaited because of numerous safety tests.

Visitors can now enjoy the spectacular view and the extreme sensations offered by the glass bridge located between two mountains peaks known as Avatar Mountains (the famous movie was filmed here), in central China, BBC reports.

The structure is six meters (19ft8in) wide and made of some 99 panels of clear glass. It can carry up to 800 people at the same time, an official in Zhangjiajie told China's state news agency Xinhua. Tourists can walk across the bridge, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan. Its transparent walkway is not only the largest of its kind ever built, but one of the most beautiful, with visibility over the top and sides, as well as through the bottom. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge “floats in harmony with the surrounding scenery and affords tourists incredible views of the nearby sandstone and quartz peaks, trees, and waterfalls. Plans are also in the works to introduce a bungee jump from the bridge in the coming months”, local authorities declared.

Architect Keith Brownlie told the BBC why they have such appeal: "It is the relationship between emotionally driven fear and the logical understanding of safety. These structures tread the boundary between those two contrasting senses and people like to challenge their rational mind in relation to their irrational fear."
