World Animal Protection campaign aims travel industry

Announcements
The animal protection organization calls on travel industry to stop promoting animal cruelty and animal related entertainment attractions

Elephants are wild-life. Not entertainers” is the slogan of the Wildlife - Not Entertainers campaign that debuted in August 2015 and was joined by over 70.000 people.

The cruel industry of elephant entertainment is spreading across Asia and Southern Africa regions. Elephants at tourist venues are subject to cruel training and are viciously abused so that tourists can enjoy rides.

World Animal Protection has announced renewal of its global campaign to reduce tourist demand for animal entertainment. The latest Elephant-friendly Tourist Pledge petitions the travel industry players to stop promoting elephant attractions.

The conservation charity targeted Thomas Cook Group, one of the world’s leading travel companies, with over 22 million customers and over USD $13 billion a year sales that supports animal cruelty by selling elephant rides and shows. Earlier this week, Thomas Cook Group agreed to stop selling elephant packages for its northern Europe markets, but the wildlife protection NGO aims for a global extension of the pledge.

So far, following World Animal Protection campaign, 63 travel companies across the world have committed to stop selling elephant attractions, including The Travel Corporation, a major tourism player featuring brands such as Contiki Holidays and Trafalgar. G Adventures.

Brett Tollman, chief executive officer of The Travel Corporation and co-founder of the TreadRight Foundation, declared about the signed commitment:

“We are proud to collaborate with World Animal Protection in the interests of ensuring the industry embraces animal-friendly tourism and strengthens wildlife protection.”

Kate Nustedt, Director of Wildlife at World Animal Protection states, as the NGO is building a global movement dedicated to protect the wildlife and convince the tourists to reduce demand for animal attractions:

"We have made progress, but some of the best known names in the travel industry are still behind the curve on animal welfare and appear unwilling to end the promotion of cruel elephant rides in all their markets.

"We're eager for the chance to work with the industry on solutions that not only put a stop to cruel elephant rides and shows, but also ensure that tourists can enjoy seeing elephants in the wild."
